Year 3 Homework

To support our in class learning of addition and subtraction, we would like the children to practice some questions to solidify their in class learning. Homework has been sent home with your child on the 16th October. We would like it to be handed back to their teacher by the 22nd October.

The children have learnt this method using whiteboards. Children will need a pencil and paper to help with their working out. The steps below are the steps they have been taught in the classroom.

1. Lay your question out as shown.

2. Represent the 3 digit number in your place value chart using counters or dienes. In this example we have represented 347 in dienes.

3. Add the one digit number to the place value chart. In our example we have added 8 ones into the ones column.

4. We have learnt that you cannot have more than 9 counters on one column so we need to exchange. Circle 10 ones in the ones column. These will be exchanged for 1 ten into the tens column.

5. Rub out or cross out the 10 ones that you circled and replace them by adding 1 ten into the tens column. Like in the example.

6. We can work out our answer based on the counters or dienes in the place value chart. Our answer is 355.

Use this method to help you with the questions in your maths homework.

If you have any questions please do ask your child's teacher.  Thank you for supporting your child in their learning at home.
