Hedges and edges.

Yesterday in Nature Club we looked at the school's borders and the difference between the plant life growing up against our boundaries and actual hedges.

A key part of our investigation was to look at the number of main plant species making up our borders.

In one small stretch of fence near to the back gate there is at least 10 main plant species, we identified three different types of ivy alone!

Our main boundary hedge, by contrast, is a single species planting which, as a non-native, supports very little wildlife but is an excellent barrier.

Back in the classroom we idscussed hedges and field boundaries using Chalkney Woods in Earls Colne, which everyone had visited at one time or another, as our case study.
