This Week in Year 4

 We have been busy learning all about multiplication this week in maths. We used a range of concrete materials and pictorial representations to help us understand multiplying 2/3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. In history, we researched and made factfiles about some of the Ancient Mayan gods.

  Story focus : Percy the Park Keeper stories by Mick Inkpen. Literacy focus : we have daily Phonics and handwriting sessions.  We have individual reading sessions, practising our blue Phonics book or reading books. Some of us have started writing captions, 'holding' the phrase and then writing it with fnger spaces - quite tricky! Please see previous post about writing.  Maths focus:  subitising and composition of 5. Adding on within 20

 Yesterday in maths, the children were learning to add on within 20.  To do this, they were using a 20 frame telling a First, Then and Now story.  For example:  First, there were 10 children on the bus.  Then, 6 more children got on the bus.  Now, there are 16 children on the bus.  The children were counting on from 10 to get their answer.

  LO: Order numbers within 20 23.01.26 Today in maths, the children were ordering numbers within 20. The children were looking at whether the number had any tens or how many more ones it had compared to the other numbers. Stem sentence: The greatest number is _. The smallest number is _.

We have been noticing a 'staircase pattern' when the Numberblocks are in order and spotting when one of them is hiding.
